How to Choose Curtains & Blinds in Dubai, Sharjah & Abu Dhabi

Walk into any curtain showroom and you'll meet a wall of options: sheer, blackout, wave, roller, zebra, roman, wooden, motorized… The choice gets simple once you flip the question around. Don't start with products — start with what each room has to do. Here's the method we use on home visits across Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
Step 1: Ask three questions per room
- Light: Does this room ever need to be dark (sleep, TV), or just comfortable (glare off screens and eyes)?
- Privacy: Who can see in — a street, a neighbouring tower, nobody? By day, by night, or both?
- Heat: Which direction does the glass face? West- and south-facing windows take the afternoon blast and deserve serious fabric.
Bedrooms: darkness is non-negotiable
Start with real blackout — the UAE sunrise doesn't respect weekends. The classic solution is a day & night set: sheer for soft, private daylight, blackout layer for sleep. On a budget, a blackout-lined roman blind inside the recess does the heavy lifting; add curtains later for softness. Light sleepers: insist on generous overlaps or wall-to-wall coverage — fit matters as much as fabric.
Living rooms & majlis: light, managed
You rarely need blackout here; you need glare control that keeps the room bright and the view alive. Sheer curtains are the default for a reason — especially in wave style on floor-to-ceiling glass, where the even folds look architectural. If you'd rather keep the window minimal, sunscreen roller blinds tame the glare while preserving the skyline.
Kitchens: practical wins
Steam, splashes and sun ask for wipeable, compact treatments: a zebra blind gives adjustable light and privacy in one motion, and rollers shrug off cooking life. Fabric romans suit open-plan kitchens that flow into living space — go for a light-filtering roman blind over the sink window if the light is precious.
Home offices: fight the glare, keep the daylight
Screens and bare glass are enemies. Sunscreen rollers or zebra blinds let you tune brightness hourly; wooden blinds do the same with warmer texture and precise tilt control — and look properly serious on video calls.
Villas & tall windows: think in systems
Double-height glass, wide sliders and multiple rooms benefit from deciding as a system: consistent fabrics room to room, wave tracks on the big glass, and — for high or numerous windows — motorization, which turns a wall of curtains from a chore into a feature. Schedules that close everything during peak heat genuinely help cooling bills.
Colour and fabric: three quick rules
- Match in your own light. Fabrics change colour between showroom LEDs and your afternoon sun — which is why we bring swatches to you rather than the other way round.
- Sun-facing rooms need fade-resistant weaves. Ask specifically; we'll point them out.
- When in doubt, one tone deeper than the wall. It frames the window without shouting.
